Icarus worked alongside Natural England’s Access to Nature programme for five years as independent evaluators. Access to Nature was a programme that funded 117 projects to bring new audiences into contact with the natural environment. Each project was responsible for their own evaluation and it was our role to develop the common evaluation framework against which they were reporting; train projects and Natural England Advisers in evaluation using a reference workbook we authored; provide pro forma reporting templates; support projects with their self-evaluation; review each evaluation report produced by the projects (at interim and final stages) to help build evaluation capacity. We collated the findings from all of the evaluation reports, and undertook additional primary research, to draft a number of evaluation products aimed at different audiences. These included thematic learning papers aimed at practitioners, annual over-arching evaluation reports, and a summary of the learning about running a grant programme of this nature.
